Chaitanya
(1486-1533)
   A Vaishnava saint who propagated the cult of Krishna and Radha in Bengal. He had become a mendicant at the age of 25. According to Chaitanya, mere conventional rites (karma) were not sufficient for salvation, which could be attained only by worshipping Hari (Krishna) and singing his praises. Chaitanya promoted the process of incorporating the lay Buddhist society into the Vaishnava fold by opening his creed to everyone irrespective of caste or belief. Chaitanya spent the last 16 years of his life at Puri. He was patronized by the Saiyid sultans of Bengal.
